Glasgow 2014: Nigeria’s Onyema & Obiji Win Powerlifting Gold, Set New World Rec.

Esther Onyema and Loveline Obiji completed a Commonwealth Games double for Team Nigeria in the women’s para-sport event on Day 10, clinching two powerlifting gold medals.

Both paralympians, named Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) by President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012, broke the world records in their respective categories to increase the country’s gold medal haul to 9 at the Clyde Auditorium on Saturday morning.  Obiji, 23, set a new women’s heavyweight powerlifting world record with a best lift of 144.0kg in her third attempt to amass a total of 122.4 points and win gold.

Glasgow 2014: Nigeria Boxing Captain Blazes Into Last 8

Efetobor Apochi Has Represented Mexico’s Guerrero In the World Boxing Series (WBS) Before.


Captain of Team Nigeria’s boxing team to the Commonwealth Games, Efetobor Apochi, overwhelmed Isle of Man’s Krystian Borucki in the heavyweight 91kg class on Sunday.

The 26-year-old is the only Nigerian to book Wednesday’s quarter-finals return date, as Wasiu Shogbamu and Wasiu Taiwo lost their light welterwight and flyweight categories fight respectively.
Apochi, will face Jai Opetaia, 19,- the youngest Australian Olympian who competed at the age of 17 at the London Games two years ago- on July 30 at the SECC (Hall 4A). The winner of the fight is guaranteed a medal.
