NFF didn’t offer me Eagles job – Zambia coach

Zambia coach Herve Renard has denied the Nigeria Football Federation wanted him to replace Stephen Keshi as Super Eagles manager.
Keshi had claimed that the NFF offered the job to the Chipolopolo manager during the South Africa 2013 Africa Cup of Nations won by Nigeria on Sunday.  The Eagles beat surprise finalists Burkina Faso 1-0  to lift their third Africa Cup of Nations title.
“After we played Ethiopia they (NFF) called me to a meeting. The board members and the President of the NFF, they told me that I could not read the game very well and that the changes I was making were not the right changes,” Keshi was quoted as saying.

Keshi’s bumpy ride to glory

Until he helped Nigeria win the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa on Sunday, Stephen Keshi’s achievements for his country in his heyday could hardly be said to have received the deserved recognition.
The 51-year-old blazed a trail in the signing of Nigerians as professional players in Europe when, after  stints with Ivorian clubs Stade d’Abidjan (1985) and Africa Sport (1986), he joined Belgian  side Lokeren in 1987.
Perhaps, Keshi  could have ended his playing career in the domestic league like Nigerian football greats such as   Segun Odegbami, Kadiri Ikhana, Christian Chukwu, Aloysius Atuegbu, Emmanuel Okala, Sunday Eboigbe, Bright Omokaro  and Best Ogedegbe if he had not been suspended by the Tony Ikhazoboh-headed Nigeria Football Association in 1985.

Nigeria soars in FIFA rankings, Below Cote d'Ivoire, Mali

New African Champions, the Super Eagles of Nigeria, moved up a massive 22 places from 52nd to 30th spot in the latest rankings released Thursday by the world football governing body, FIFA.
The February 2013 rankings is the best ever for Nigeria in over 30 months as the country has endured a tough curve in her football over the years.
The victory in South Africa, Nigeria's third Africa Nations Cup win was, however, not enough to shoot her straight to the summit of teams from Africa as the Coach Stephen Keshi side only moved from 10th place to fourth position in the ranking of Africa teams

AFCON fallout: Chelsea drop Moses

English club Chelsea have dropped their Nigeria international Victor Moses from the squad to face Sparta Prague in their Europa League tie on Thursday. The Nigeria international had been quickly recalled for the trip to the Czech Republic which forced him to travel back to England from South Africa instead of heading to Abuja with his teammates.
But Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez has carefully avoided making the same mistake as Celtic manager, Neil Lennon, who played Efe Ambrose against Juventus two days after the Africa Cup of Nations final match against Burkina Faso in South Africa. Ambrose, who only arrived in Glasgow on match day, turned out a huge deficit to Celtic despite his sterling performance for Nigeria in South Africa. Lennon would admit on Wednesday that he took “a gamble” by fielding Ambrose.
